The Sanja Matsuri is one of Tokyo’s largest and most iconic festivals, taking place annually around the third Saturday of May in Asakusa.
Over the course of three days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—this traditional festival draws nearly 1.8 million visitors, including many locals from the Asakusa area.

The festival kicks off with a spectacular Grand Procession featuring traditional performing arts and intangible cultural heritage performances.
On the second day, about 100 mikoshi (portable shrines) from local neighborhoods come together and make a lively procession through the streets.
The festival comes to a close on the final day as three large mikoshi make their way through the town and return to the shrine in the ceremonial finale known as Miyairi.

Celebrated as the most energetic time of a year in Asakusa, Sanja Matsuri is a beloved seasonal tradition that marks the arrival of early summer.
